1980-90s Reruns Make DD The Most Watched Channel In India With Record Impressions

Fuelled by iconic shows like Ramayan, Mahabharat, Shaktimaan, Bomkesh Bakshi and more Doordarshan National has emerged as the most-watched channel across genres in the week of 28 March to 3 April.

Interestingly, DD was nowhere to be found in the list of top 10 channels a week a two before in the Hindi General Entertainment Channel (GEC) category, while now, it has topped all categories.

In figures, a report released by BARC shows that DD National was the most-watched channel both in the evening and in the morning. It garnered a whopping 580 million impression in the morning slot of 9 am-10.30 am and 835 million impressions in the 9 pm-10:30 pm slot. These impressions stood at a mere 2 million a week ago.

Sun TV and Dangal respectively took 2nd and 3rd spot.

The surge in viewership is the result of the rerun of classics like 1987 epic Ramayan, which viewership grew by a whopping 454 times combining both morning and evening slots. Shaktimaan, on the other, hand also contributed to 20.8 million impressions.

Mahabharat, on the other boosted DD Bharati’s viewership 365 times to 145.8 million impressions in week 13 in the morning and evening slots combined.

Overall, average TV viewership has grown up by 43% among Indians since March 28. News and movies across languages recorded an all-time-high growth this week, at 251 per cent and 77 per cent respectively.
