A Step By Step Guide For Rectifying Your Income Tax Return Data

After a person files his income tax return, the income tax department sends an intimation under Section 143(1) according to all the information the person provides. A taxpayer can rectify or correct the information provided under Section 154 of the income tax act. The person can only process his rectification request if the person is registered on the e-filing portal. The person should always remember that in order to look for the rectification the taxpayer should be a registered user. The person should also keep in mind that he or she should have received the intimation under Section 143(1) of the income tax act.

Below mentioned are the three categories for rectification of the mistakes

  1. The rectification for reprocessing the return.
  2. The rectification for tax credit mismatch.
  3. The rectification for correction of tax return data.

Steps To Follow For Rectification In The Tax Return Data

  1. The first step is to log in to your e-filing portal by just entering your username and password.
  2. The next step is to go to the services section and click on “rectification” and then file a “new request” for rectification.
  3. Under the “income tax” option choose the appropriate assessment year.
  4. Click “Continue” and choose return data correction via offline mode.
  5. In the next step, you have to attach the correct data in the XML or JSON file.
  6. The taxpayer applying for rectification in the tax return should provide a valid reason for the rectification of the data. There is a small box present where the person needs to mention the reason for rectifying the details in a few sentences.
  7. It is really important to mention that during the rectification process, the person is not allowed to add any new source of income or any deductions.
  8. After you have successfully completed all your steps, you now just have to click the “submit” button for the rectification process.
  9. Once everything is submitted, a success message will pop up and it will also carry the “rectification reference number” which you have to preserve for all future reference.
