Aadhaar Card Is Now a Compulsion for Tatkal Train Tickets

Indian Railways is bringing big changes to how you book Tatkal train tickets! Starting July 1, 2025, only passengers who have completed Aadhaar verification will be able to book Tatkal tickets on the IRCTC website or app. This move aims to stop misuse, make ticketing more transparent, and ensure that emergency tickets go to genuine travellers.

Let’s break down what’s changing, how you can prepare, and tips to help you book your Tatkal tickets smoothly.

What’s Changing in Tatkal Ticket Booking?

1. Aadhaar Verification Becomes Mandatory

From July 1, 2025, you must have your Aadhaar linked and verified on your IRCTC account to book Tatkal tickets. Without Aadhaar authentication, you won’t be able to use the Tatkal facility.

2. Extra OTP Step from July 15

From July 15, 2025, every Tatkal booking will require an additional OTP (One-Time Password) verification sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number. This adds another layer of security and ensures only genuine users can book.

3. Restrictions for Agents

To prevent bulk bookings and give regular passengers a fair chance, IRCTC agents will not be allowed to book Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes after the booking window opens:

  • 10:00 AM to 10:30 AM: Only passengers (not agents) can book AC class Tatkal tickets.
  • 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM: Only passengers can book Non-AC class Tatkal tickets.

Why Are These Changes Happening?

  • Stop misuse by agents and middlemen
  • Make tickets more available for real, last-minute travellers
  • Increase transparency and fairness
  • Support India’s push for digital governance using Aadhaar
