Above 130 Arrested In UP After Protests Over Prophet Remark

People pelted stones at authorities in Prayagraj and Saharanpur, raging protests can be seen in four other cities of Uttar Pradesh after Friday’s prayers over the remark by now suspended BJP leader on Prophet Mohammad.

Over 130 were arrested in Up from six districts of Uttar Pradesh. In Prayagraj protests were more intense as people were setting cars and motorcycles on fire. Some of them even tried to torch a police vehicle. Eventually, the peace was restored by the police after utilizing tear gas and lathis to control the mob, said one Policeman injured in the event.

Prashant Kumar, Additional Director General of Police said, “As many as 136 protesting people were arrested from six districts of the state till 9.45 pm on Friday.”

Arrest Figures From Different Cities

Mr. Kumar asserted that the Police arrested “45 protestors from Saharanpur, 37 from Prayagraj, 23 from Ambedkar Nagar, 20 from Hathras, 7 from Moradabad, and 4 from Firozabad.”

Protestors were using slogans, shouting against recently suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma over her remark on Prophet Mohammad in a live Tv Debate which also sparked concerns in several Islamic Nations. Even some protestors were demanding a death sentence as a punishment for her remark in Saharanpur.

Demonstrations against the remark were also seen in “Bijnor, Moradabad, Rampur, and Lucknow.” As per the locals, stone pelting was continued for 15 minutes in the major city Prayagraj. They asserted that some police officers faced stone-pelting as they were deployed on the front and the situation got intense when more protests joined the group.

Additional Chief Secretary, Awanish Awasthi requested protestors to use “democratic ways of protest without resorting to violence.”

“Minor force was used to stop some people involved in the violence. The situation in Prayagraj is now peaceful. I would like to appeal to people to use democratic ways of protest without resorting to violence, “ he said.

Further added, “Because of our preparedness, no life has been lost. We will take strict action against those found involved in the violence.”
