Bangladesh Puts The Number Of Its Illegal Citizens In India In Public Domain

While the government of the day in India is looking to weed out illegal migrants from its territory, the first time in recent years the neighboring state of Bangladesh has put the number of its illegal migrants in India in public domain.

As per the information shared by the Director-General of Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB), Major-General Shafeenul Islam close to 1,000 (999 to be exact) Bangladeshis were detained by Bangladesh in 2019 for living in India “illegally”. Major-General Islam also informed that legal proceedings have been initiated against them.

The announcement from the side of Bangladesh comes after Director-General level talks between Border Security Force (BSF) and Border Guards Bangladesh in New Delhi that was held from December 25th to 30th, 2019.

Out of the total 999 illegal migrants, 135 are children, 258 are women and 606 are men. As per BGB around 133 of them are arrested who were trying to cross the border from either side.

Bangladesh has clarified its stand on illegal migrants in India when in a recent visit to India Bangladesh’s foreign policy adviser Gowher Rizvi said that his country would take its citizens back if they were illegally staying in India. However, it has to be proved that the person is a Bangladesh citizen, he said.

During the Director-Generals meet Bangladesh also shared the information that 96 Indians are “illegally” staying in Bangladesh. Out of them, 62 were handed over to the Border Security Force (BSF) and the rest were detained against whom the legal proceedings have been initiated.
