BSNL Joins Airtel, Jio, and Vi with eSIM Rollout in India

India’s state-owned telecom operator BSNL has officially launched its eSIM service, placing it alongside Airtel, Jio, and Vodafone Idea in offering this modern connectivity solution. Initially available only in select circles, the service caters mainly to users of premium smartphones like the iPhone, Google Pixel, and Samsung Galaxy S series that already support eSIM technology.

Why eSIM is a Smarter Choice

An eSIM functions just like a regular SIM card but is embedded digitally inside your smartphone, removing the need for a physical card. It doesn’t wear out, break, or require frequent swapping. However, one must be careful not to delete the eSIM configuration accidentally, as doing so will disconnect your network instantly.

For users who frequently switch numbers or travel internationally, eSIM technology is especially convenient because multiple profiles can be stored and activated as needed. It also contributes to a more sustainable, clutter-free mobile experience by eliminating the need for plastic SIM cards.

How to Get and Activate an eSIM

Each telecom provider in India has its own method to issue and activate eSIMs:

  • Jio users can request an eSIM via the MyJio app or by visiting the nearest Jio store.
  • Airtel and Vi users can apply through their respective apps or send a text to 121 or 199 with the keyword “eSIM”.
  • BSNL users need to visit a customer service center to complete the process. The application requires Aadhaar-based KYC verification.

Once the request is submitted, the activation steps are straightforward:

  1. A QR code will be sent to your registered email ID.
  2. On your phone, go to Settings → Mobile Networks/Cellular/SIM Services.
  3. Select the option to “Add eSIM” or “Download eSIM”.
  4. Scan the QR code sent to your email.
  5. A verification call may be conducted to validate the activation.

The entire setup can take up to 4 hours to complete. After successful activation, your physical SIM will automatically be deactivated, and your phone will operate solely on the eSIM.

As per TRAI’s security guidelines, SMS services will be temporarily disabled for the first 24 hours after activation. This safeguard is designed to prevent SIM swap fraud and protect users against potential misuse.
