Can You Get Fined for Driving in Slippers in India?

People often wonder if wearing slippers while driving a car or bike can land them a traffic fine. Traffic cops sometimes claim it’s against the rules, but this creates confusion since no clear law spells it out directly. Over the years, drivers have remained unsure if slippers really break any traffic code.

India’s Motor Vehicles Act lacks any section that fines drivers specifically for slippers or flip-flops. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari cleared this up back in 2019 in a tweet, pointing out misconceptions about the rules. Cops hold no power to issue challans just for footwear choice under current laws.

Safety Risks Involved

Even without fines, slippers pose real dangers on the road. They slip easily off pedals, make gear shifts tricky, and cut grip during brakes or turns. Shoes provide better control and foot protection, reducing the risk of accidents during sudden stops or rough rides.

Stick to closed shoes for safer trips every time. Check local traffic habits, but prioritise grip and quick response over comfort. Safe feet mean safer roads for all.
