Delhi Set to Make Water Bill Compulsory for Property Registration
Thinking of buying or selling property in Delhi? Get ready for a major change! The Delhi government is planning to make water bills a must-have document for property registration. Here’s what this means for you and why it’s happening.
Why the Change?
Delhi has about 29 lakh registered water connections, but the actual number of households is much higher. Many people, especially in unauthorized colonies, use water without official connections. This not only causes a big loss in revenue for the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) but also leads to poor water management and untreated waste entering the Yamuna river.
How Will This Help?
- Making the water bill mandatory will ensure all households have legal water connections.
- It will help settle any pending water dues during property sales, making transactions smoother for buyers and sellers.
- The move aims to bring more transparency and reduce disputes over unpaid water bills in property deals.
- With more homes officially connected, Delhi’s water and sewage infrastructure will improve, helping to stop untreated water from polluting the city.
The proposal is under review, and the government has already reached out to sub-registrar offices for feedback. If approved, you’ll need to provide a water bill receipt—just like you do with electricity bills—when registering your property.
Delhi is also working on connecting all unauthorized colonies to the sewer network by 2027 and installing new sewage treatment plants. These steps, along with the water bill requirement, aim to create a fairer and more reliable water supply for everyone in the city.
