Delhi Set to Relaunch Affordable Interstate Buses: All You Need To Know
The Delhi Transport Corporation is bringing back its interstate bus service, marking the end of a 15-year hiatus. This long-awaited restart is scheduled for September 25, kicking off with a handful of buses on select short routes to gauge public response. The initial focus will be on nearby cities like Baraut, with subsequent expansion planned for more destinations in phases.
The revival comes as the corporation moves towards a greener future, starting with 100 electric buses earmarked for interstate travel across 17 major routes. For farther-flung destinations, new BS-VI compliant buses will operate under a wet lease model, enabling a concessionaire to handle the logistics and daily running while ensuring high standards and minimal emissions. This cautious approach addresses challenges like the lack of sufficient charging infrastructure for electric vehicles in distant cities.
Destinations, Amenities, and Expected Fares
When fully rolled out, the new interstate service will connect Delhi to an impressive list of cities, such as Rishikesh, Haridwar, Dehradun, Panipat, Ayodhya, Lucknow, Moradabad, Amritsar, Chandigarh, and Jammu. Commuters can look forward to traveling on sleek, air-conditioned buses, each stretching 17 metres and providing generous luggage capacity for convenience and comfort.
Fare details have yet to be revealed but are expected to be budget-friendly — notably lower than many existing options on these routes. The goal is to offer affordable travel without sacrificing quality, making these buses a preferred choice for long journeys once again.
The previous interstate bus service was discontinued in 2010, coinciding with a major fleet conversion to CNG-powered vehicles due to environmental policies and fuel supply limits in neighboring states. Before the suspension, DTC’s interstate buses were renowned for their value, comfort, and reliability, especially among long-distance travelers. With the new launch, the government aims to restore this legacy through modern amenities and a sustainable approach, positioning the service as a top pick for commuters seeking cost-effective intercity travel.
