Delhi’s Big Clean-Up: 20-Day Drive to Transform the Capital
Delhi is set for a major transformation as Chief Minister Rekha Gupta kicks off an ambitious 20-day cleanliness campaign, promising a cleaner, greener, and more beautiful city. This comprehensive drive aims to tackle long-standing sanitation issues, enhance public spaces, and set new benchmarks for urban hygiene.
Key Highlights of the Cleanliness Drive
1. Ban on Single-Use Plastics
A strict ban on single-use plastics in religious places, schools, and markets has been imposed. This decisive step targets one of the most persistent sources of pollution and aims to make public spaces healthier and more sustainable.
2. Twice-Daily Cleaning Operations
For the first time, cleaning of roads and public areas will occur twice daily, morning and evening, ensuring that waste does not accumulate and the city remains spotless throughout the day.
3. Focused Action on Waste Hotspots
Market areas and known waste-prone zones are under special scrutiny. These spots will receive intensive cleaning, while dust-prone areas will be greened through plantation drives, reducing air pollution and beautifying the city.
4. Zero Tolerance for Encroachments and Wall Defacement
Strict measures are in place against illegal dumping, encroachments, and wall defacement. Offenders face hefty fines and legal action, signalling a no-nonsense approach to civic upkeep.
5. Accountability and Monitoring
Senior officials, including district magistrates and deputy commissioners, are tasked with daily inspections. Each will designate a “model area” in their jurisdiction to showcase ideal sanitation and greenery, setting an example for the rest of the city.
6. Improved Waste Management
Garbage trucks will operate on fixed schedules with covered loads to prevent spillage. Public toilets, drains, and sewers have been prioritised for regular sanitation, addressing key pain points in urban hygiene.
7. Community Participation and Green Initiatives
The campaign encourages public involvement, with residents’ welfare associations playing a role in waste segregation and cleanliness. Shrubs and plants will be added to road medians and central verges to curb dust and enhance aesthetics.
This campaign is being rolled out under the “triple-engine” governance model, uniting the efforts of the Centre, state, and municipal bodies. With clear responsibilities and daily monitoring, the initiative aims to break years of stagnation and fulfil the vision of a Swachh Bharat clean and green India.
Delhi’s 20-day mega cleanliness drive is more than just a campaign; it’s a movement to reclaim the city’s beauty and set a new standard for urban living. With strong leadership, strict enforcement, and active public participation, Delhi is on the path to becoming a true benchmark for cleanliness and civic pride.
