Delhi’s ‘Saheli Smart Card’: Empowering Women and Transgender Travelers With Free Bus Rides
The Delhi government is preparing to launch a new digital step forward in public transport – the ‘Saheli Smart Card’, a pink lifetime pass that will allow women and transgender residents to travel free of cost in all Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and cluster buses. Expected to debut around Bhai Dooj on October 23, this initiative is being hailed as one of the government’s most thoughtful efforts to enhance travel convenience and independence for women across the city.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has directed the transport department to complete all preparations swiftly so the rollout aligns with the festive season, when travel among families peaks. Most DTC buses have already been fitted with card-reading machines, ensuring a smooth transition from paper-based to digital travel systems.
From Pink Tickets to Digital Freedom
The Saheli Smart Card will replace the pink paper tickets introduced in 2019 for women’s free bus travel during Bhai Dooj that year. Once the card is activated, beneficiaries will no longer need to collect paper tickets for each ride. The card will come preloaded for free bus use but will also be compatible with the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) system, meaning it can later be recharged and used for other transport modes like the Delhi Metro.
Officials confirmed that the backend integration is fully complete, and the scheme will likely roll out in carefully planned phases. The card will feature personal identification details, including the holder’s name and photograph, to prevent misuse and ensure accountability.
Two variants of the card will be available:
- Zero-KYC Card: Activated instantly using mobile verification and Aadhaar OTP.
- Full-KYC Card: Issued through partner banks, featuring a photo and personal details, and operable as both a travel and debit card.
Lifetime Validity and Easy Access
The Saheli Smart Card will remain valid for life, making it a one-time solution for hassle-free, secure, and sustainable urban travel. Registration will take place through DTC’s official website and designated centers across the city. Applicants must provide Delhi address proof, Aadhaar, and complete the required KYC steps before activation.
For women and transgender residents of Delhi, this card goes beyond being a travel pass — it symbolizes mobility, safety, and empowerment. It’s not just a ticket; it’s a statement of inclusion, ensuring every journey in the capital is smoother, smarter, and fairer.
