According to DMRC authorities, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is nearing completion of the rollout of its QR (Quick Response) code-based ticket system, which would enable passengers to enter and depart Metro stations just by using their mobile phones. The technology is ready to use after many experiments by DMRC. After final testing, officials stated that they will introduce the technology by the end of June.

Anuj Dayal, principal executive director, of corporate communications at DMRC added that “The phone-based QR code ticketing technology is ready for the Delhi Metro network. However, as an initial step, internal trials of this new technology are in progress. Under these trials, various tests such as regression tests are being conducted, to ensure that once the system is in place, there are no hindrances in generating QR code tickets. We hope to make this facility available for the passengers by the end of this month,”
The Delhi Metro Rail application would be used to create the e-tickets, according to a Metro official. People can book their tickets using a variety of payment methods and their QR tickets will be generated on their smartphones.
DMRC official also added “Commuters simply have to place their phones in front of the QR code scanner at the automatic fare collection (AFC) gates, which then grants them entry to the Metro station,”
Commuters will still be able to buy tokens, use their smart cards, or purchase paper-based QR tickets even after the e-ticket introduction. Long-term plans call for phasing away the tokens, according to DMRC officials.
DMRC last month launched QR code-based paper tickets on all its Lines, with at least two entrance and exit AFC gates at all Metro stations capable of reading a QR code, to help with this new change to QR code technology. The move has not been easy, though as many commuters continue to report issues.
