Driving License Gets Smart Upgrade: New Features, ATM-Like Design Explained

The Central Government is preparing to launch a modern version of driving licenses (DL) and vehicle registration certificates (RC) as part of its ‘One Nation, One Card’ project. Expected to roll out by late September or early October 2025, these redesigned cards will feature advanced security elements, microchips, and QR codes. Their look and feel will be similar to an ATM or debit card, making them highly durable, easy to use, and hard to tamper with.

The production of these cards will take place at a centralized facility in Bengaluru before they are dispatched directly to applicants. States such as Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have already started gearing up for the rollout.

What’s New in the Upgraded Driving License?

The existing DL contains only basic details like number, address, date of birth, blood group, and type of vehicle authorized. In contrast, the upcoming version will store 25 different categories of information, ensuring more utility and security.

Some of the standout features include:

  • Emergency contact numbers
  • Option to pledge for organ donation
  • Biometric details
  • Near Field Communication (NFC) support

With NFC chips, checking and verifying driver data will be faster and far more reliable, helping law enforcement strengthen rule enforcement on the roads.

ATM-Style Design and Application Process

The updated DLs will be built with polycarbonate material instead of PVC, giving the cards a sturdier, long-lasting body resistant to wear and tear. Personal details will be laser-engraved, which means they won’t fade over time and will be tamper-proof. Unlike earlier, when cards were issued locally by RTO offices, these redesigned cards will be manufactured centrally in Bengaluru and delivered straight to the applicant’s address.

How to Apply for a New DL Online:

  1. Visit the official Parivahan Sewa portal (parivahan.gov.in).
  2. Select your state.
  3. Click on “Apply for Driving License.”
  4. Fill out the online form and upload required documents.
  5. In some states, photo and signature uploads are mandatory.
  6. Book a slot for your test and pay the application fee.
  7. On the test day, carry original documents and the receipt to the RTO or approved testing center.

Since June 2024, applicants are no longer required to take their driving test at an RTO. Instead, recognized private driving schools have been authorized to conduct tests. Only those tests will be considered valid for license approval.

When Will You Get the New License?

The smart, ATM-style driving licenses are expected to be available across India starting end of September or early October 2025. New applicants will begin receiving them right away, while existing license holders will gradually be shifted to the upgraded format.

This is more than just a cosmetic change—it’s a leap toward modernization. With enhanced security layers, more personalized information, and a longer-lasting design, India’s driving licenses are set to step into the digital age in a big way.
