Empowering Delhi’s Workforce: New Initiatives Promise Health, Nutrition, and Dignity
Delhi’s government has unveiled a transformative set of measures aimed at uplifting the city’s labour force and their families. These initiatives, announced on International Labour Day, are designed to address the pressing challenges faced by workers-especially those toiling in harsh conditions and living away from their families.
Key Highlights of the New Initiatives
- Annual Health Check-ups for Labourers and Families
Recognizing the tough and often hazardous environments in which many labourers work, the government will now provide free yearly health check-ups for workers and their families. This proactive step aims to catch health issues early and ensure ongoing well-being. - Mandatory Midday Rest During Peak Heat
To protect labourers from the intense Delhi heat, a compulsory rest period from 12 noon to 3 pm will be enforced during summer months. This measure is intended to prevent heat-related illnesses and exhaustion, ensuring workers’ safety during the hottest part of the day. - Nutritious Meals at Atal Canteens
In a bid to combat hunger and malnutrition, 100 Atal Canteens will be established across the city, especially near construction sites and slum areas. These canteens will offer wholesome meals for just ₹5, making nutritious food accessible to those who need it most. - Special Welfare Boards for Every Worker Group
For the first time, dedicated welfare boards will be created for various worker groups, including construction workers, gig workers, domestic helpers, and taxi and auto drivers. These boards will focus on the unique needs of each group, ensuring tailored support and representation. - Comprehensive Health Coverage
All registered labourers in Delhi will now benefit from free medical treatment up to ₹10 lakh through the Ayushman Bharat Yojana. This coverage extends to both government and private hospitals across India, offering peace of mind and financial security in times of illness. - Childcare Support for Working Mothers
A network of 500 Palna Kendras (childcare centres) will be set up citywide. Staffed by trained nurses and anganwadi workers, these centres will provide safe, reliable care for children, enabling mothers from low-income backgrounds to work without worry. - Recent Wage Hike for Workers
In addition to these welfare measures, the government has also increased minimum wages across all worker categories, ensuring that earnings keep pace with the rising cost of living.
A New Era of Dignity and Support
These sweeping reforms signal a new era for Delhi’s workforce. By prioritising health, nutrition, financial security, and family support, the government is not only addressing immediate needs but also laying the groundwork for long-term empowerment and dignity for those who build and serve the city.
