EPFO Launches Online Facility to Fix Wrong PF Numbers Linked to UAN

For many employees in India, problems with Provident Fund (PF) accounts are not unusual. Among the most troublesome issues is when an incorrect Member ID (PF number) gets attached to a Universal Account Number (UAN). This mistake can cause errors in service history, hold up withdrawals, and complicate the transfer of accounts.

New Online De-linking Facility by EPFO

Earlier, correcting such issues meant repeated visits to the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) office along with a mountain of paperwork. From 17 January 2025, the EPFO has simplified this process with a new online de-linking service, allowing employees to remove a wrongly linked PF number from their UAN directly through the portal.

The online system is designed to be quick and efficient. Employees no longer need to depend on manual forms or long approval cycles. Instead, the request can be submitted and processed from home within minutes, making the process far more transparent and hassle-free.

How to Correct a Wrong PF Number Online

The de-linking process has been kept user-friendly:

  1. Log in to the EPFO portal using your UAN and password.
  2. Go to “Member Services” and select PF account management.
  3. Check your service history to identify wrongly linked numbers.
  4. Submit a request to de-link the incorrect Member ID.
  5. Wait for approval, after which the wrong PF number will be removed.
  6. Once cleared, you can link your correct PF account easily.
