The deadline to have FASTag that was earlier set for December 1st is now been extended by the government for two weeks till December 15th. FASTag is a part of the electronic toll collection project of government which aims at doing away of cash collections at toll plazas.
FASTag is an electronic device (like a sticker/keychain) with an in-built chip. The tag uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology for making toll payments directly from the prepaid or savings account linked with it.
The FASTag is affixed on the windscreen of the vehicle and enables you to drive through toll plazas, without stopping for cash transactions. This promotes smooth and seamless movement of vehicles on Highways.
FASTag project is a joint effort between the NHAI, Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) and the National Payments Corporation of India for providing an interoperable nationwide toll payment solution, including clearing house services for settlement and dispute management.
The FASTag can be purchased online through sellers like Paytm or can be purchased from banks. Paytm is also offering online recharge facility for the FASTag. Once the amount is deducted from the FASTag (as you cross Toll Plaza) an SMS is received in regards to the same.

As of now, the FASTag is accepted at over 560 toll plazas, with more toll plazas being added under its ambit. Post 15th December having a FASTag would be mandatory for vehicles crossing toll plazas failing which they would be charged a fine over and above the toll amount.
