As the FASTag has been made mandatory for all vehicles since January 15th, the government is in a mood to push it further. Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari has called for increasing its ambit.
Gadkari said ‘FASTags should be made mandatory for obtaining vehicle insurance’. Doing this would bring more vehicles under the ambit of insurance said the minister. As per data from IRDAI (Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority), about 40% of vehicles in the country are not under the ambit of insurance.
The FASTags (that are now mandatory) if made necessary for vehicle insurance would automatically bring universalization of vehicle insurance in the country. FASTag is an electronic toll collection system in India, operated by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI).
