Filing ITR in 2026? 4 Major Assessment Rule Changes You Must Know

An income tax assessment verifies details in your Income Tax Return (ITR) for accuracy and compliance. Key types include summary assessment for quick fixes, scrutiny assessment for detailed probes, best judgment assessment when data is lacking, and re-assessment for unreported income, long handled via manual paperwork.

CBDT, empowered under Section 143(3), now conducts electronic checks for speed, openness, and responsibility. The 2019 e-Assessment Scheme, rebranded Faceless Assessment, routes cases through NaFAC – no office visits, all online responses cut delays and bias.

Finance Act 2026 Major Updates

The budget brings targeted fixes effectively soon:

  1. Notice Issuance: Sections 280/281 (prior 148/148A) alerts only from local jurisdictional assessing officers, bypassing faceless portals despite court views – backdated to April 1, 2021 (old Act), forward from April 1, 2026 (new Act).
  2. DIN Safeguard: Orders remain enforceable despite small document ID number slips, as long as any traceable link exists – ends technical knockouts.
  3. Strict Timelines: Wrap core assessments in 12 months post-AY (from AY 2019-20). Section 275 draft orders dictate faster paces over broad Section 286 bars, overriding rulings – retroactive from April/October 2009.
  4. Block Probe Changes: Ties periods to actual hidden income years for non-searched parties; clocks from raid/requisition start; bumps the finish line to 18 months (was 12) starting Tax Year 2026-27. Transfer pricing cases gain 12-month draft extensions.

These streamline disputes, enforce deadlines, and solidify faceless ops – respond promptly online to notices. Update Aadhaar and link accounts early; consultants help with complex scrutiny. Ensures fairer tax net amid rising filings.
