Gangubai Kathiawadi is a biographical crime drama produced by Jayantilal Gada and directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The main cast of the movie includes Alia Bhatt, Shantanu Maheshwari, Indira Tiwari, Vijay Raaz, Sema Pahwa and Jim Sarbh. Ajay Devgn has made an extended cameo appearance in the movie. The movie will be released in theatre on February 25. It has been shortlisted to be screened at 72nd Berlin International Film Festival.
The movie is about Mafia Queen Gangubai Kathiawadi who was from Kathiawad, Gujarat. Her real name was Ganga Harjivandas and was pushed into prostitution at a very early age. She wanted to become an actor in Bollywood and ran away with her lover to chase her dreams. After she ran away with Ramnik Lal, accountant of her father; she married him to start a fresh life. But to her fate, she was deceived and sold by her husband to a brother for Rs 500. After which she was forced to live in red light area of Mumbai.
The movie is an adaptation of a book ‘Mafia Queens of Mumbai’ written by Hussain Zaidi. Over age she became a prominent name in Kamathipura, red light district of Mumbai. She rose to power and justice in her area and soon became Mafia Queen. She never used her power to exploit young girls and women who are forcefully brought into prostitution. She was determined for betterment of young girls and women. She advocated for their education so that they can find their place in the respectful allies of society.
The movie trailer was released a few days ago and it looks like we will have another blockbuster performance by Alia Bhatt. She looked promising in her dialogue delivery and she has gracefully played the part of Gangubai Kathiawadi. The choice of Sanjay Leela Bhansali in casting his actors has been supreme and this movie would be another proof.
But one minute into the trailer you can see Vijay Raaz in the role of a transgender and people have a problem with that.
