In another political tiff between Congress and BJP, the Home Ministry has ordered investigations against three trusts linked to Gandhi family for alleged wrongdoing in financial dealings.
The Home Ministry in a tweet said that it has formed a committee to coordinate investigations into alleged income tax and foreign donation rules violation by Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust, and Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust.

The focus of the committee will be to find if the trusts violate the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), Income Tax Act and Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act in anyways. The committee will be lead by the special director of the Enforcement Directorate.
Last month BJP president had accused Congress of illegally donating money from Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund to the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation.
“PMNRF, meant to help people in distress, was donating money to Rajiv Gandhi Foundation in UPA years. Who sat on the PMNRF board? Smt. Sonia Gandhi Who chairs RGF? Smt. Sonia Gandhi. Totally reprehensible, disregarding ethics, processes and not bothering about transparency,” BJP president JP Nadda had said.
The BJP also alleged that during the budget speech of 1991, as many as 100-crore of money was allocated to Rajiv Gandhi Foundation.

“Budget speech document from 1991. Page 16, Para 57. Manmohan Singh gave 100 crore to Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, 20 crore a year for five years,” a statement from the BJP said.
Congress had rubbished the statement.
Congress President Sonai Gandhi is the head of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation with Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, P Chidambaram and Manmohan Singh as board members.
