Talking to the media on Friday Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Ram Vilas Paswan said that the government is going to make hallmarking mandatory for gold jewellery.

The government would issue the notification in this regard on January 15, 2020, said Paswan. However, the rule would come in effect one year later, that is from January 15, 2021.

The decision has come days ahead of the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) 8 December deadline for India to comply with the gold benchmark and issue a quality control order.
