In a bid to block Chinese e-commerce companies from bombarding Chinese products into India, the government is mulling to scarp provision under which citizens can receive duty-free ‘gifts and samples’ priced under Rs 5,000 from abroad. To note, no customs duty is levied on such gifts.

However, the Government noticed the policy was being misused by Chinese retails who dump Chinese products in the form of gifts in India. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) was earlier planning to limit the number of gifts one can receive to four, however, the policy was getting difficult to implement.
