PAN or Permanent Account Number is an essential document that is produced and assigned by the Income Tax Department of India, that carries a unique 10-digit code number. It is issued to an individual taxpayer, Hindu Undivided Families or HUFs, a firm, a business organisation or a trust. Thus, it’s a unique document to identify a taxpayer for the Income Tax Department. The aim is to track all the financial activities of an individual or a firm to make sure they pay an accurate and right amount of tax.
Whereas Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique identification number assigned by UIDAI to all citizens. UIDAI or Unique Identification Authority of India is responsible for producing and assigning the Aadhaar number to every citizen of India. Also, the authority is liable to keep the world’s largest identification database safe and secure.
Aadhaar-PAN Linking
PAN and Aadhaar both are the most essential documents in India assigned by the Government for identification purposes. The PAN is also used for financial activities and tax purposes. Whereas, Aadhaar has multiple uses, and even serves as an address proof. The Government has decided to make it mandatory for all citizens to link their Aadhaar-PAN, aside from a few exceptions.
“The Finance Act, 2017 had inserted a new section 139AA in the Income Tax Act, 1961, requiring every person who is eligible to obtain an Aadhaar to quote his/her Aadhaar number while applying for PAN or furnishing return of income with effect from July 1, 2017.”
