India is preparing to launch a groundbreaking initiative aimed at transforming airport security and operational efficiency. The central government, in collaboration with key aviation authorities, is set to introduce a pilot project that will link airport security passes for airline, airport, and ground handling staff with their vehicle registrations, biometric data, and Aadhaar identification. This move is designed to boost accountability and elevate safety standards at airports nationwide.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Airports Authority of India are working closely with the Central Industrial Security Force to roll out this pilot at Kolkata’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport and Chennai International Airport by October. The project will initially run for three months, after which a phased expansion to other airports across the country is planned.
Under this pilot, employee entry passes will be integrated with their biometric information, vehicle high-security number plates, and FASTags for seamless identification. Employee biometrics will be cross-verified with Aadhaar-linked data, ensuring only authorized personnel gain access to sensitive airport zones.
This integration is expected to deliver several key benefits:

- Improved VIP protection and advanced anti-drone protocols
- Unified training for all airport staff, ensuring consistent standards
- Streamlined passenger experience with reduced wait times and smoother entry
Recent workshops in Delhi brought together top officials from the CISF, airport security chiefs from nearly 70 airports, and representatives from major aviation bodies. They discussed leveraging facial recognition technology for both staff and passenger entry, integrating these systems with CCTV networks, and digitizing standard operating procedures for faster, smarter security responses.
One innovative proposal is the introduction of a zoning system for airport entry pass holders. Using RFID technology, employees will be restricted to designated areas, with alarms triggered if unauthorized access is attempted. This approach is expected to minimize the risk of insider threats and enhance overall airport security.
The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security will continue to issue entry passes, while the CISF will handle ID checks at entry and exit points. Integrating these passes with facial recognition aims to ease congestion at gates, reducing friction between staff and passengers and improving the overall travel experience.
The initiative also emphasizes the importance of robust passenger grievance mechanisms and regular joint training exercises, ensuring that all staff—from security to airline crew—maintain a high level of professionalism and efficiency.
