On Friday, the Union Minister of Women and Child Development Smriti Irani reiterated India’s commitment to advancing the goals of gender equality and women empowerment to ensure that women and men are conferred equally and enjoy equal opportunities.
Smriti Irani said, “India remains steadfast in its commitment to build a more just and equal post COVID world for our daughters and women across the world” speaking at the 65th session of the UN Commission of the Status of Women.

“In India, we are developing and executing flagship programmes which primarily focus on expanding women’s employment, financial inclusion, self-employment openings, nutrition, healthcare, security, safety, and education,” she added to her statement.
She also stated that the “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” scheme has improved the Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB) by 16 points and now the ratio has increased from 918 to 934. The Maternal Mortality Ratio of India has reduced from 130 per 100,000 live births in 2014-16 to 113 per 100,000 live births in 2016-18.
“India contributes 300,000 USD to @UN_Women for 2021,” India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador T S Tirumurti tweeted on Thursday.
T S Tirumurti said that India reaffirms its support towards women empowerment and gender equality, describing UN Women as a “valued partner in our progress from women’s development to #women-led development.”
Assistant Secretary, General and Deputy Executive Director of UN Women, Anita Bhatia has thanked India for making such a huge contribution and showing its support to UN Women.
