Indian Railways Cancel 80 Trains Till April 1 To Curb Gatherings

Following the surging coronavirus impact in India, the Indian Railways on Tuesday announced the cancellation of as many as 80 trains citing low occupancy. The trains will remain cancelled from March 18 to April 1, as per a report by Livemint.

Among those cancelled, the Central Railway has cancelled 23 trains, followed by South Central Railway cancelling 29 trains, Western Railways cancelling 10 trains, northern Railways five, North Western Railways four, East Coast Railways five and South Eastern Railways cancelling nine trains from March 18 to April 1.

To stop overcrowding, that provides a favorable condition for the virus to spread, the government has also hiked the price of the platform ticket from Rs. 10 to Rs. 50. The charges are levied across 250 stations in the country. The increase charges are also applicable at the New Delhi railway station.

Other stations to experience a hike in the pice are stations of Mumbai, Vadodra, Ahmedabad, Ratlam, Rajkot and Bhavnagar. “The increase in the platform ticket prices is a temporary measure to contain extra load of people in the railway premises”, a Railway Ministry official said.

All this is being done to curb down the number of cases of cornavirus in the country, which stands at 147. Three people have been reported dead of the virus till this day,
