If you’re unaware, Indian Railways is kind enough to offer concessions in tickets to some passengers. The range of concessions offered by the railways starts from as low as 10% to as high as 100% in several cases.
The eligible passengers who can avail railway concessions should be from any of these categories – physically challenged, patients, senior citizens, Izzat MST (Monthly Season Ticket).
Also, there is no concession if you opt to travel in trains like Humsafar, Antyodaya, Gatimaan and Vande Bharat. All this information was shared by the Minister of Railways and Commerce & Industry, Piyush Goyal in Lok Sabha on Wednesday.
Here’re the railway concessions that passengers falling under tthe below-mentioned categories can avail.
1) For Cancer patients who are travelling alone or with an attendant for treatment
- 75% in (Air Condition) 2nd, 1st class and AC chair car
- 100% in (Sleeper Class) SL & 3AC
- 50% in 1AC & 2AC
- One attendant will also be eligible for the same element of concession (except in SL & 3AC where escort gets 75%)
2) Thalassemia patients who are travelling alone or with an attendant for treatment
- 75% in 2nd, SL, 1st Class, 3AC, AC chair Car
3) Heart patients travelling alone or with an attendant for heart surgery
- 50% in 1AC and 2AC
- One escort is also eligible for the same concession

4) Kidney patients travelling alone or with an attendant for kidney transplant Operation/Dialysis
5) Haemophilia patients travelling alone or with an attendant for treatment
- 75% in 2nd, SL, 1st Class, 3AC, AC chair Car
- One escort is also eligible for the same element of concession
6) T.B./Lupas Valgaris patients travelling alone or with an attendant
- 75% in 2nd, SL and 1st Class
- One escort is also eligible for the same element of concession
7) Non-infectious Leprosy patients
- 75% in 2nd, SL and 1st Class
- One escort is also eligible for the same element of concession
8) AIDS patients – for treatment/check-up at nominated ART Centres
- 50% in 2nd Class
9) Ostomy patients
- 50% in MST (Monthly Season Ticket) & QST (Quarterly Season Ticket).
- One escort is also eligible for the same element of concession.
10) Sickle cell Anaemia
- 50% In SL, AC Chair Car, AC 3-tier and AC 2- tier classes
11) Aplastic Anaemia
- 50% In SL, AC Chair Car, AC 3-tier and AC 2- tier classes.

All these concessions are applicable only on the base fare.
