India’s First Semiconductor Chip Coming This Year, Nation on Path to Become 3rd-Largest Economy
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently delivered an exciting update on India’s progress in semiconductor technology. Speaking at the 2025 Economic Times World Leaders Forum, he revealed that the country’s first domestically made semiconductor chip is expected to hit the market by the end of this year. In addition, the government is advancing rapidly in developing India’s own 6G technology, aiming to position the nation at the forefront of next-generation telecom innovation.
Looking back, Modi reflected on a missed opportunity from decades ago when India could have ventured into semiconductor manufacturing 50 to 60 years ago but did not. Today, the situation is radically different, with new semiconductor manufacturing plants beginning to take shape within the country, signaling a strong push toward technological self-reliance.
On the economic front, Modi projected a bright future for India, asserting that it will soon become the world’s third-largest economy and on track to achieve developed nation status by 2047. He emphasized that government reforms are driven by genuine commitment rather than obligation. One major reform slated for rollout before this Diwali festival is a streamlined Goods and Services Tax (GST), designed to simplify tax laws and lower costs for citizens.
Alongside the government’s ambitions, Modi called on the private sector to ramp up investments in critical areas such as clean energy, quantum computing, battery storage, advanced materials, and biotechnology. Highlighting that reforms are voluntary commitments, he underscored their potential to boost manufacturing and stimulate demand across Indian industries.
The overarching message was one of optimism: through a continuous focus on reform, performance, and transformation, India is poised to revitalize its economy, generate new employment opportunities, and emerge as a global leader capable of overcoming the challenges of slow economic growth.
