It’s a good thing that the world has begun to identify the heroics of animals who have invariably come forward to help during emergencies like war, unaware of the risk it entails. And to honour their exceptional heroism, Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut is all set to open the country’s first war memorial for animals.
The memorial will be dedicated to service animals like dogs, mules and horses. It will remember the animals who, over the years, have helped the army in counter-insurgency operations in Kashmir and in the battlefield during the Kargil War.

The memorial, similar to the National War Memorial in Delhi, as per a report by Hindustan Times is being made at the Remount and Veterinary Corps (RVC) Centre and College in Meerut.
The memorial will have names and service numbers of 300 dogs, 350 handlers and a few horses’ mules inscribed at the memorial.
A dog named Mansi, who was awarded army’s highest honour for dogs due to her role in the counter-insurgency operations in Kashmir in 2016, tops the list of animals to be remembered.
Her handler, Bashir Ahmed War, will also adorn the tablet. Ahmed has posthumously been awarded Sena Medal for gallantry. The Shaurya Chakra, which is the country’s third-highest peacetime gallantry award, is also the highest award rewarded to a dog handler.
