News for Railway passengers, from now on IRCTC will charge you to carry excess luggage on Trains just like Air Travel. Without booking, you cannot carry extra baggage, if you do so or if you get caught, six times the normal fee will be charged to you.

How Much Luggage Passengers Can Carry Without Paying a Fee or Without Booking?

70 kgs of luggage are allowed if you are travelling in AC first class, 50 Kgs if travelling in AC 2-Tier. 40 Kgs luggage is allowed without any charges if travelling in AC 3-tier, AC chair car, and sleeper class. For 2-class luggage, the carrying limit is 25 kg.

How Can You Book Your Luggage With IRCTC?

Luggage will travel by the same train as the owner, but he or she should be present 30 minutes before the train leaves or departure time. Online ticket booking users can also book their luggage in advance through the same method.

A notification regarding the same said, “Luggage which is not securely packed will not be accepted for booking and carriage unless the sender or his authorised agent executes a forwarding note and records therein such defects or improper packing.”

The Railway Ministry also requested the passengers to travel light, and carry heavy baggage only if necessary. In a tweet, the Ministry stated in Hindi, “If the luggage is more than the enjoyment of the journey will be half! Do not travel by train carrying more luggage. In case of excess baggage, go to the parcel office and book the luggage.”

What Are The Penalty Charges If You Get Caught Without Luggage Booking?

Now the passengers carrying unbooked or partially booked luggage will be charged six times the normal fee. “However, if unbooked or partially booked luggage is detected more than the free allowance of the luggage but within the marginal allowance, it is charged at 1.5 times the luggage scale rate,” a notification said.
