The state government of Karnataka has come with a Rs 1, 610 crore relief package for farmers and the unorganized sector of the state. Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa made an announcement on Wednesday. This comes after the state hiked excise duty on liquor by 11%.
The package is aimed at benefitting flower growers, horticulture farmers, barbers, labourers, weavers, and MSMEs in the state. “Since all temples are closed and there are no festivals or other events, there is no demand for flowers. It is estimated that farmers cultivated flowers in about 11,687 hectares. The government has decided to announce compensation of Rs 25,000 per hectare. Limited to the maximum extent of one hectare, for the flower growers who have suffered losses“, said the CM.

Here are some key announcements made by the CM Yediyurappa:
- Washermen (dhobis) and barbers who were bereft of earnings during the lockdown will get a one-time relief of Rs 5,000. Move to benefit 60,000 washermen and 2.30 lakh barbers
- One-time relief of Rs 5,000 for taxi and auto drivers
- Additional Rs 3,000 financial assistance (in addition to Rs 2,000 already paid) for construction labourers to benefit 11.8 lakh, construction workers
- Concession for those paying electricity bills in advance or on time
- The electricity connection of consumers who have not paid the balance bill amount will not be disconnected till June 30. Reduction in the interest in delayed payment of the bill
- Rs 2,000 to be sent directly into the bank accounts of 54,000 handloom weavers under Nekarara Santana Yojana
Other states like Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Delhi, etc have already come up with sich kind of relief packages for residents of the state.
