As almost ‘everybody’ is at home either working or ‘ quarantine ‘ amidst the COVID-19 the internet is overloaded. The sudden surge in digital use is already putting pressure on the network infrastructure. Taking that into consideration the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has written to the telecom department. COAI has written the letter in regards to the over-the-top (OTT) companies.
COAI has asked OTTs like Netflix, Hotstar, Voot, and Amazon Prime Video to reduce the burden on the networks. The body has called for lowering streaming quality to Standard Definition (SD) from High Definition (HD). Youtube has also been contacted in this regard.

Going by reducing the ‘streaming resolution’ the load can be eased by 25% to 30%. As per Netflix who is planning to lower streaming resolution in Europe traffic overflow can be reduced by around 25%.
