For the unaware, northern lights happen as electrically charged particles from space enter the Earth’s upper atmosphere at a very high speed. In simple terms, the charged particles from the sun strike atoms in Earth’s atmosphere. This causes electrons in the atoms to move to a higher-energy state. When the electrons drop back to a lower energy state, they release a photon: light. And that is when Northern light happens.
