Indian Railway has brought a new rule where one of your major problems has got solved. If you have a confirmed train reservation ticket but you are unable to travel due to some reasons you don’t need to cancel it. You can transfer the ticket to any other person. This is a special service that is provided by Indian Railways.
Many a times you have planned to go somewhere but due to last minute duties you are unable to go then you only have to cancel your ticket. And in case if you have decided to send somebody else in your place you have to book a new ticket. And we all know that booking a new ticket last minute is an impossible feat that no one can achieve. This is why railways have brought this facility.
Passenger can easily transfer a confirmed ticket in name of any family member like brother, sister, son, daughter, father, mother, husband and wife. You have to make request 24 hours before the departure time of the train. After doing the change previous passenger details will be replaced with new passenger details. If you are a large group of people then you have to apply 48 hours before departure of the train.

But make a note that you only get one chance to change the passenger details. For instance, if you have transferred the ticket to someone else’s name then you can not undo the process by any means. So, think carefully before taking the decision.
Steps To Transfer Railway Ticket
- Take Print Out of Online Ticket or Counter Ticket
- Go to nearest railway station in your city
- Carry government issued ID Card of the new passenger
- Apply for ticket transfer through ticket counter
Transfer of tickets can happen for both online and counter tickets. You need to write an application to station manager. You must submit proof of relationship with the person to whom you are transferring your ticket through ration card, passbook, voter card.
