Former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma and her family have been provided with security by Delhi Police after getting rape and death threats. Recently, a case was also registered against unknown persons for sending rape and death threats to the former BJP spokesperson.
Controversial Remarks Against Prophet Mohammad
Nupur Sharma landed in trouble after she made controversial remarks about Prophet Mohammad. The remarks were made by her during a television debate show last month. Amid the controversy, she made several phone calls to the police. The Delhi police have registered a case and have also notified Twitter to join and contribute towards the investigation. Nupur Sharma filed a complaint on May 27, 2022, with the cyber cell unit stating that she was getting death threats and was a victim of “targeted hatred”.
Delhi Police Files FIR
Delhi Police with a special cell filed an FIR under the following sections of IPC – sections 506 (criminal intimidation), 507 (criminal intimidation by an anonymous communication), and 509 (insulting modesty of a woman). A Delhi Police officer said ”, After examining the said complaint, IPC section 153A (promoting enmity between different groups) was added to the case. We have sent notices to Twitter and are waiting for their response,”
Sharma’s remarks have sparked controversy and have been strongly criticized across the globe. Many countries including Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman, the UAE, Iran, Jordan, Afghanistan, Bahrain, Maldives, Libya, and Indonesia reacted to her statement. After the incident, she was suspended from BJP. Later, she withdrew her statement saying that her statement was a result of “continuous insult and disrespect towards our Mahadev”.
Nupur Sharma Booked For Her Remarks
Mumbai police and Hyderabad police have also booked Nupur Sharma for hurting religious sentiments and spreading communal hatred. Her suspension letter from BJP got viral and had her address in it. She has requested the media to not make her address public for her family’s safety.
