Pune, among the other regions in Maharastra, saw a sudden boom in onion price after rain in various parts of the country damaged onion crops and cut short the supply. Onion at Nashik district’s Lasalgaon wholesale market (APMC) was selling at ₹120 per kg as of October 22.
“Price has increased as supply from farms is affected due to rain. The price of onion that was around Rs 70/kg last week increased to Rs 120/kg today,” a trader said.
Officials at the mandi claim that the supply of onion has fallen by a whopping 70 percent in two months – from 22,000 quintals/day in August to 7,000 quintals/day the past week (October).
