Former Cheif Justice of India (CJI) and the pronouncer of landmark ‘Ayodhya Verdict‘ Ranjan Gogoi took the oath today. As he took oath as Rajyasabha MP opposition in the house erupted. The opposition took to sloganeering, protest and walkout as he took the oath.
Gogoi is known for giving decision in landmark cases like triple talaq, Judge ‘Loya’ murder case etc. He is been accused of favoring government through his judgments. It is also accused that his nomination to ‘Rajyasabha’ as MP is the gift of his loyalty to the government. Since the day his name was recommended by President it created controversy. Interestingly Gogoi was accused of sexual misconduct by Supreme Court staffer but the case was closed.
The former CJI however, refuse to speak on the matter. He said that he would speak after taking the oath. He took the oath at 11:00 PM today as opposition protested in the house. Now, a response from his side is awaited on the issue.

Gogoi’s fellow judges have also criticized the move. His nomination to Rajyasabha is seen as a blow to judicial independence in India. The principle of separation of power requires the judiciary to be neutral. Further, it sends a wrong message for those who are serving at the top level in judiciary.
