The other-wise conservative and notorious neighbor of India, Pakistan has done a first in countries move towards woman empowerment. In its decades-old military history, the country appointed its 1st female, ‘Lieutenant General’ on Tuesday. The media wing of the Pakistan army made the news official.
Major General Nigar Johar is the lady who has created history. The officer who hails from Swabi District in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province is also appointed as the first female surgeon general of the Pakistan Army.
Johar joined the Pakistani army’s Medical Corps after graduating from the Army Medical College, Rawalpindi, in 1985. Three years back in 2017 she became only the 3rd woman officer in the Pakistan Army to attain the rank of major general. Before her 2 female major generals were Shahida Badsha and Shahida Malik.

Interestingly Nigar’s father and husband have also given their services to the nation’s army. Her appointment is a big boost for the rise of women in the patriarchal and orthodox society like Pakistan.
