On India’s 74th Independence Day, PM Modi unfurled the Indian Flag for the 7th consecutive time at the Red Fort in Delhi. Following the flag hoisting, PM Modi, like every year, gave a speech from the Red Fort to the nation in presence of limited audience owing to the pandemic.
Beside everything else, PM Modi’s speech, this year, also had the mention of the use and benefits of sanitary pads and how the government is empowering women by making them freely available for one who can’t afford it.
“This government has been always concerned about the health of our daughters and sisters. Through 6,000 Janaushadhi centres, about 5 crore women have got sanitary pads at Re 1. Also, for their weddings, we have made committees so that the money can be used at the right time,” said PM Modi said on the morning of August 15.

His comment on sanitary pads became the highlight of discussion on social media. The words drew a round of praises from social media. Menstruation, sanitary napkins are not usually a part of men’s vocabulary. So to have the Prime Minister speak about it on Independence Day meant a lot in shattering those taboos.
Talking about mensuration today is as much as important as talking about sex education is. Only if people, especially men, are educated enough about the same then only they would be able to understand why it’s a normal biological thing and there is nothing impure about it.
You go Modiji.
