Rahul Gandhi’s comment while addressing an election rally in Jharkhand’s Godda has been the point of disruption in the Parliament today. While attacking the government on their failure to curb the crime against women in India Rahul said, “Narendra Modi had said ‘Make in India’ but nowadays wherever you look, it is ‘Rape in India’.
The Congress MP from Wayanad further said that “In Uttar Pradesh, Narendra Modi’s MLA raped a woman, then she met with an accident but Narendra Modi did not utter a word”.
Rahul’s “Rape In India” remarks attracted cries of shame in parliament on Friday with protests and shouting leading to repeated adjournment of the sittings. Union Minister Smriti Irani said in Loksabha that, ” This is the first time in history that a leader is giving a clarion call that Indian women should be raped. Is this Rahul Gandhi’s message to the people of the country? “
The minister further said that “Not all men are rapists. This is an insult to India… Rahul Gandhi is touching 50 and doesn’t realize that such a statement seems like an invitation to rape in India,” as BJP MPs kept on raising slogans against Rahul Gandhi.
Rahul however, got some support from DMK’s Kanimozhi who said that “We respect the PM’s Make in India initiative. We want the economy to grow. But what is happening in the country? That is what Rahul Gandhi intended to say. Unfortunately, Make in India is not happening and women in the country are being raped. This is a concern.
The BJP has been demanding an apology from Rahul Gandhi on his remarks and the Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said that “Such people should not be part of the House”. Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi has said that he would not apologize for his remarks.
