Railways Set to Impose Airline-Style Restrictions on Luggage
Indian Railways is gearing up to implement a stricter baggage policy, bringing train travel much closer to the rules followed at airports. While luggage restrictions have technically been in place for years, enforcement was minimal. Now, the Railway Board has decided to strictly apply these limits, especially at select major stations across the country.
New Limits on Free Luggage Allowance
Under the updated regulations, the amount of free luggage allowed will depend on the class of travel:
- First AC passengers can carry up to 70 kg without extra charge.
- For AC two-tier, the limit is 50 kg.
- AC three-tier and sleeper class passengers are permitted 40 kg.
- Those in the general class can carry up to 35 kg.
Any oversized or improperly placed luggage that blocks entry points will attract penalties. Passengers carrying two-wheelers, bicycles, or other bulky items will not be eligible for free allowance and must book such items separately.
Excess Baggage Rules and Penalties
If a traveler’s luggage slightly exceeds the permitted limit, it can be carried by paying the normal luggage rate. However, if the excess weight is significant, penalties will be charged. Importantly, passengers with extra baggage are required to book it in advance at the designated Luggage Office before starting their journey.
The Railways has emphasized that these rules are not new but will now be strongly enforced to ensure smooth boarding, reduce congestion, and maintain passenger safety. Officials have already been instructed to monitor baggage more closely and ensure consistent implementation across select stations.
