Amidst Prime Minister Modi’s call for eliminating single-use plastic by 2022 Reliance has come up with an effective idea. India’s largest petrochemical company Reliance is launching a project to use plastics in road construction.

The project is like a boon for India which produces 14 million tonnes of plastic annually. And further lacks an organized system for management of plastic waste. The announcement of the project came Tuesday.

Reliance Industries would work with National highway authority and individual states for the project. Light plastics, like carry bags or snack wrappers that are difficult to recycle, would be used for the project.

Reliance Industries would shred these light plastics and would mix them with bitumen for construction of road. The company backs the formula as a long-lasting one. The move from Reliance comes at a time when campaigners such as Greta Thunberg ramping up pressure on businesses to help tackle climate change.
