The all-Russian research Institute of fisheries and Oceanography, on Sunday, released the last 21 beluga whales that it had held in a facility called “whale jail”. As many as 93 whales had earlier been captured and kept in a facility originally named Srednyaya Bay. Notably, Russia had captured the whales to sell them to aquariums in China.

Russia, after being criticized for holding the whales had been releasing the same in batches. Russian NGO Sakhalin Watch, which had campaigned for the whales to be freed, said the final 21 belugas were released from two ships on Sunday.
