Russia is currently observing a state of emergency after 20,000 tonnes of diesel oil leaked into a river within the Arctic Circle. The leak was caused after a storage tanker’s leg break and the tank collapsed on Friday.
The oil spill is so bad that the officials claim that the clean up of the same could take at least 5-10 years.
And you will believe them after you see these images of the oil spill. A European Space Agency had shared a satellite image of the Ambarnaya river, captured on May 23 by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission, before some 20,000 tonnes of oil leak.
The same when compared with the picture captured after the oil leak looks horrible. The picture, with the oil spill, was captured on June 1 by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission and assure how bad the situation is in Russia.
Environmentalists say the oil spill, which took place last May 29, was the worst such accident ever in the Arctic region. The worst problem currently is to collect the oil as soon as possible as the fuel has begun to dissolve in the water. And if that happens, it will not only affect the livelihood of many people but also nature and marine life.
