Sachkhand Express: The Train That Serves Free Meals All Day Long
India’s railway network is a world of its own — vast, diverse, and filled with incredible journeys. Yet, among thousands of trains that connect cities and towns across the country, one stands apart for its spirit of generosity and community service: the Sachkhand Express. This unique train offers every passenger free meals throughout the entire journey, from morning breakfast to evening dinner, turning travel into an experience of warmth and kindness.
The Sachkhand Express (Train No. 12715) runs between Nanded in Maharashtra and Amritsar in Punjab, covering a stretch of roughly 2,000 kilometers. The route connects two of the most sacred destinations for Sikhs — Takht Sri Hazur Sahib, the final resting place of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, and Sri Harmandir Sahib, also known as the Golden Temple.
But this long journey is much more than a railway ride. It is a living example of seva, the Sikh principle of selfless service. For nearly three decades, every passenger aboard has been offered free food, inspired by the tradition of langar, where people from all walks of life share a meal as equals.
Free, Wholesome Meals from Dawn to Night
The 33-hour trip ensures no one goes hungry. Breakfast, lunch, evening tea, and dinner are served at major stations along the route, each thoughtfully prepared to be nourishing and satisfying. These meals are funded entirely through donations to gurdwaras situated along the train’s path, many of which are linked to key pilgrimage sites.
Behind this remarkable service are dedicated volunteers and local committees who plan, cook, and serve food with care and devotion. Their tireless work not only feeds thousands of travelers every year but also adds a touch of humanity and compassion to India’s rail journeys.
