In real life, there is no happy ending. Maybe that is the reason we like sad Bollywood movies, movies that make us cry.
Although not everyone wants to see a movie portraying the harsh reality of life and that’s why most of the Bollywood movies are entertainers with a fictional, happy ending.
But that doesn’t mean Hindi film industry has failed to make movies with sad endings. There are several movies that will make you teary-eyed and some might even send you running for tissues.
Have a look at the list and then relate how many have you already cried on-
1. Neerja
A model and a flight attendant, Neerja Bhanot is the character played by gorgeous ‘Sonam Kapoor’. She was a beautiful 22 years old girl who made me cry with her humanity and care when the plane got hijacked. Her selflessness to save others is something that touched me and made me use a box of tissues. *Spoiler Alert*
She dies in the end. Also, she saved 300 passengers before dying and this is a real-life story of Neerja Bhanot.
2. Rand de Basanti
A patriotic film, this one is a masterpiece. I bet you have already watched it multiple time, and if not, then you are missing out on a lot of good things. Starring Aamir Khan as a rebel for a cause, this movie will give you goosebumps and tears at the same time.
Two of the most emotional scenes in this movie are: first when Madhav dies and the second is the last talk between Aamir Khan and Siddharth before they get shot.
3. Aashiqui 2
I didn’t cry, but I was almost at the verge. Released in 2013, starring Shraddha Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapoor, this film is one of the best Bollywood love stories. Rahul (Aditya Roy Kapoor) a famous singer and drunk head who doesn’t have any real goal in his life. But then, he meets a bar singer, Arohi (Shraddha Kapoor).
Rahul falls in love with her voice first then falls for her. Their love story is quite appealing but sadly this is a list of movies with sad endings and that’s why Rahul dies in the end.
4. Bajrangi Bhaijaan
I have said this many times and I’m saying it again, I don’t like Salman Khans’s acting. But sometimes Bhai makes exceptions and this movie is one of them. From Bhai’s acting to the main story- everything is filled with emotions. One of the best sad Bollywood movies full of emotions and drama.
Though you won’t just die with the tears during a sad scene, as the movie is funny enough to make you cry with laughter as well.

5. Agneepath
Although the main premise of the movie is action, action, and action. still, there are scenes in the movie that’ll make you cry. When Vijay (protagonist played by Hrithik Roshan) meets his sister for the first time, I could feel the emotions and the background song made me weak. After that, there was no chance I could stop my tears.
Though, I had to cry silently because there were a bunch of cute college girls sitting on my left.
6. Ranjhana
Starring Dhanush and Sonam Kapoor, Ranjhana is a real-life love story. It’s little desi and that’s what makes it more relatable. If you have a crush, you, at some point might react the way Dhanush did in the movie. One of those sad Bollywood movies which will teach you a lot about what happens in real life.
Totally relatable movie material.
7. Taare Zameen Par
For the fact, I know I’m not the only one who cried while watching this. It is one of the most loved sad Bollywood movies. One of my friend whose native language is not Hindi told me that even when he doesn’t understand what the dialogues are really trying to tell, he still cried and understood the entire story.
Starring Aamir Khan and featuring Darsheel Safary, this one is a multi-watch movie.
8. Kal Ho Na Ho
I’m not really sure if I’m going to cry watching this movie again but I did cry when I watched it for the first time. Starring Shah Rukh Khan who has cancer (too cliched, I know) made me cry during the climax. And most of the people who watched this movie had the same reaction. Which is why, it deserves a place in the sad Bollywood movies list.
Especially when others found out about SRK’s cancer problem and that he doesn’t have much time left.
9. Barfi
The is one of those sad Bollywood movies completely based on emotions, as the main hero, Ranbir Kapoor cannot speak. The movie is pretty funny at times but during the last scene where Barfi (main character played by Ranbir) take off his shoe and throw it up in the air so that Jhilmil (played by Priyanka Chopra) can see it and come to him, will definitely make you feel sad.
I cried on this one.

10. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil
Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Aishwarya Rai Bachan portrayed the difference between love and lust. From the very beginning, the movie will hook you up but the part where Anushka accidentally meet his ex-boyfriend was a pretty sad scene for Anushka, Ranbir and me as well.
No kidding.
In Conclusion:
It is not easy to make a man cry, and I might not be wiping off tears from my face (I did tough) while watching all of these movies but I did felt very sad. Not just the story but also the acting of stars will make you appreciate their work.
