Hearing a PIL (Public Interest Litigation) challenging the validity of Allahabad’s name being changed to Prayagraj the Supreme Court (SC) on Monday issued a notice to the Uttar Pradesh (UP) government.
The petition has pointed out that the state government cannot change the names of railway stations, central universities and other institutes as they are controlled by the central government. The government earlier said that it was restoring the old name of the city that was changed by Akbar defending its move.

The Centre had on January 1 last year approved renaming of Allahabad as Prayagraj based on state government’s demand.
