In an unprecedented and laudable move, Scotland has become the first country in the world to pass a bill that seeks to make all the period products free of cost for the country’s women population. As many as 112 Scottish Parliament members voted unanimously in favour of the bill.
The bill will now have to pass the scrutiny of the committee stage to become a law. Notably, the parliament revisited a draft submitted by Lawmaker Monica Lennon called the Period Products (Free Provision) Scotland Bill to land upon the decision.
“These are not luxury items. They are indeed essential and no one in Scotland should have to go without period products,” Lennon said.
