Days after the US removed India and 24 other countries, including China, from the list of developing countries, Shiva Sena has criticised Donald Trump saying that the move will lead to bhayankar dushparinam or grave consequences.
The office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) had issued a notice earlier this week which withdrew India’s developing country tag.
Withdrawing the status of developing countries from India and other countries means depriving them of benefits given by Washington to the same.
The move also means that the US can now trigger investigations to study whether nations are harming American industries with unfairly subsidised exports.

Sena in an editorial for mouthpiece Saamana wrote, “The Trump administration has thrown a ‘googly’ by claiming India is now a developed country and not a developing one because India’s global trade has increased by 0.5% and today India is part of the group of powerful countries called G20”.
The moves come days after PM Modi announced that Trump would be on a visit to India on Feburary 24 and 25. The two leaders are expected to sign major deals during the Trump visit who will be accompanied by his wife.
“The World Trade Organization (WTO) gives a lot of subsidies to developing countries. Trump could not see this. So he has removed India, China, and South Korea from the list of developing nations,” the editorial further added.
Snatching India’s developing country status at a time when it is trying to revive its ailing economy can be a major blow for the country.

“He has made this move to ease American industrialists but has broken the back of Indian businessmen in the process,” Saamana said.
