Sent Money to the Wrong Bank Account or UPI ID? Here’s How You Can Get It Back

Accidentally transferring money to the wrong account or entering an incorrect UPI ID can cause instant panic. But the good news is that, with quick action and the right approach, it’s often possible to recover your funds.

Act Fast: Contact Your Bank Immediately

If you notice you’ve sent money to the wrong person or account, reach out to your bank as soon as possible. Whether you used UPI, NEFT, RTGS, or IMPS, prompt communication is key. Most banks have designated helplines and online complaint systems to handle such issues quickly.

Provide every relevant detail — transaction ID, date, time, amount, and recipient ID or account number. This information helps the bank initiate a trace request on the transaction.

For UPI transactions, both your bank and the recipient’s bank usually coordinate to contact the receiver and ask for a refund. While UPI payments are instant, banks can still help reverse them if the recipient agrees or acknowledges the mistake. If the person doesn’t respond or refuses to return the funds, the issue can be escalated to the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the body that supervises UPI operations.

When the Recipient Refuses to Refund

If the recipient refuses to send the money back, you can file a written complaint with the bank and local police. According to Indian law, such cases can be treated as civil or criminal matters depending on intent and evidence. It’s essential to keep a record of all communications, including screenshots, emails, and chat history, showing that the transfer was an honest mistake.

Filing a First Information Report (FIR) can empower the bank to use legal means to retrieve the money. Authorities may contact the recipient directly or take further action, depending on the case.

Always store transaction receipts, screenshots, and confirmation messages. These documents serve as critical proof if banks or legal agencies need to verify your claim.

Prevent Future Mistakes

While recovery is possible, prevention is always better. Double-check all details before confirming any payment.

  • Verify the receiver’s UPI ID or account number carefully.
  • Use QR code scanning instead of typing manually to minimize typing errors.
  • Confirm the payee name displayed before final submission.
  • Opt for payment apps that offer a “verify recipient” or “confirm payee” step.

Experts also recommend reporting any mistaken transfer within 24 hours. Acting quickly gives banks the best chance to block or trace the transaction before the recipient withdraws the funds.

Accidentally sending money to a wrong account can feel overwhelming, but staying calm and acting immediately can save the situation. Contact your bank, escalate to NPCI if required, keep all transaction proofs, and don’t hesitate to approach law enforcement when necessary. Swift action and awareness are your best tools to recover your hard-earned money.
